FOOD BANKS: ONTARIO
• For every dollar donated, we can acquire and distribute eight dollars worth
of food.
• 126,163 households a month use food banks in Ontario.
• 322,911 people a month use food banks in Ontario.
• 129,059 children a month use food banks in Ontario.
• 40 per cent of food bank users in Ontario are children.
• Over 60 per cent of food banks in Ontario reported that they have seen an
increase in the number of working poor accessing their facilities in the past
six months.

PUBLIC OPINION
• Two in three (or 67 per cent of) Canadians are seriously concerned about
hunger in Canada today.
• Over 80 per cent of Canadians believe the primary responsibility for
solving the problem of hunger lies with government.
• 41 per cent of Canadians personally know of someone who has used a
food bank.
• 81 per cent of Canadians believe that government cutbacks and
inadequate social programmes cause the problem of hunger.

HUNGER: GENERAL
• In 1997, an estimated 4 per cent of Canadians, or 1.1 million people, were
hungry (or food insecure). Single parent families and households reporting
their major source of income as welfare, unemployment insurance or
workers’ compensation were most likely to be hungry.
• In 1999, 4.1 per cent of Canadian households, including 338,000 children,
went hungry because of lack of money.
• Families who report child hunger are 13 times more likely to report income
from social assistance than those who did not report child hunger.
• In 1999, 40 per cent of food insecure households borrowed money to
stretch their income to buy food. 14 per cent sold possessions and 9 per
cent bought food on credit. 28 per cent skipped meals or ate less.

HUNGER & HEALTH
• Individuals in food insufficient households are more likely to rate their
health as poor or fair, having restricted activity, poor functional health,
suffering from multiple chronic conditions, and having major depression
and distress.
• Individuals in food insufficient households are also significantly more likely
to report having heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and food
allergies. Hunger also hinders the ability to manage the dietary
requirements of these conditions, increasing risk of further complications.
• Women in food insufficient households are less likely to be normal weight
and more likely to be morbidly obese.
• A U.S. study of elderly disabled women demonstrated that hunger was
significantly associated with depression among all women, poorer social
health and physical performance among white women and a greater
number of medical conditions among minority women.
• A U.S. study of elderly disabled women also determined that iron
deficiency anemia was 2.9 times more likely among women reporting
hunger.
• Severity of hunger or food insecurity has been found to be related to
poorer self-rated health, activity restrictions and chronic conditions among
low-income women in Canada.
• In Canada, two studies of dietary intakes found that high-risk members of
food insecure households showed a high estimated prevalence of
inadequacy for a number of nutrients including folate, iron, zinc, and
vitamin A. Both studies also found that mothers were at greatest risk, as
they are the first to carry the burden of hunger.

HUNGER & CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
• Many children below the poverty line suffer from iron deficiency, which has
negative impacts throughout a pregnancy, and long-standing negative
developmental effects on children.
• Zinc deficiency causes anorexia and stunts childhood growth. Severe zinc
deficiency causes multiple birth defects.
• Malnutrition in early childhood development can affect the development of
the nervous system and causes problems for emotional and cognitive
development.
• Poor nutrition has effects has on cognitive abilities including problem solving,
concentration, and organizing memories.

will not be allowed on the race course.
If determined a racer is in use of such device
they will be disqualified from the race.
Also be aware The predictor 5k and 10k will be held on an open road course.
Be sure to take extra precaution while at all intersections and stop when needed.
Roads may also be slippery race morning.
Hint: Accommodate these factors when predicting your time
